sdr2 spoilers beyond the orenronen lp are spoiler-boxed!

Peko was orphaned at a young age. She was told that she was abandoned at birth and that she had been kindly taken in by the Kuzuryuu group, Japan's largest yakuza family. She was trained from a young age to be the hitwoman for the family's heir, Fuyuhiko Kuzuryuu. She was systematically abused, taught to believe that she was simply a tool to be used by her young master. She trained in both kendo and swordfighting in order to protect him, and she soon became a highly renowned kendoka due to her skill in battle.

This talent earned her the position of Super High School Level Kendoka (or Swordswoman, depending on the translator) at the prestigious Hope's Peak Academy. However, her time at the Academy ended on a bad note - the young master's sister was murdered during her time there, and she and Kuzuryuu would eventually join SHSL Despair in destroying the world.

After SHSL Despair's leader was defeated, she and the rest of the "remnants of Despair" were rescued by the Future Foundation. One of its rogue members, in an attempt to save them, placed them into a program meant to restore their hope. Unfortunately, a virus got in and started a game of mutual killing. In the simulation, Peko winds up dying as the second murderer, having killed Koizumi in her young master's place for covering up the murder of his sister.

Character personality: If you asked Peko to describe herself, she would tell you that she is nothing more than a tool. A sword to be used for the Kuzuryuu family, a blade to cut down the heir's enemies and a shield to protect him from harm. The Kuzuryuu family rescued her when she was an abandoned orphan, and as such she owes them a life debt.

Of course, as much as she aspires to this ideal, she is indeed human. She has feelings and opinions just like any other person, as much as she's loathe to admit and express them. She's surprisingly easy to embarrass - she gets incredibly flustered when Hanamura correctly deduces that she wears a black thong, for example. She's also easily thrown off by compliments, being understandably unused to them.

Even so, she believes that she is sub-human. Years of being told that she existed simply to enact the will of Fuyuhiko Kuzuryuu has left her without any belief in her own worth. She values his life much more than her own because that has been ingrained within her - his command for her to forget that isn't enough, because even her compulsion to obey his commands can't outweigh the psychological damage.

Her harsh upbringing has left her with numerous psychological scars, not the least of which is her lack of social skills. Even her speech patterns are formal and stilted. Smiling is something foreign to her, and it's only through talking with Hinata about her crush that she learns how to smile without looking like a deranged maniac. She's also never had a friend before, or anyone close to her - in fact, she only attempts to get to know her classmates because those were her orders, although in her free time events Hinata winds up becoming her precious first friend.

She also has problems with coming across as more intimidating than she means to be. She notes that animals are intimidated by her, although she means them no harm. She loves animals, but they run away from her whenever she tries to pet them or care for him. In spite of her fearsome exterior, however, she dislikes senseless killing. Despite being a yakuza hitman and a murderer in-game besides, she asks the remaining students to ensure that no further murders take place. This may be because she believes so strongly in her sort of justice - one that is derived from her yakuza roots, believing that she should strike those who deserve to be cut, and protect those who need saving.

Furthermore, in both fighting and in general, she's a very intelligent opponent. She's able to come up with a plan to frame herself for Koizumi's murder within a relatively short period of time, in order to give her young master the best chance to successfully escape the island. It is no wonder that she is a champion-level kendoka, as kendo itself is all about reading one's opponent's moves and devising the best way to strike.

In the end, Peko's a strange mix of everything - who she wants to be and who she is, what she has been taught to be and what she's naturally drawn towards.

Effects of memory loss: Without her memories, the whole mentality that she's been raised under - that she is nothing more than a tool, that she neither not human or allowed to have her own feelings and wants - is rendered irrelevant. Now that she has no reason to try to be something she's not, she's going to be much closer to her natural personality, as opposed to the purely emotionless persona she affects in an attempt to fulfill that ideal.

Of course, she's naturally a reserved person to begin with, so she won't suddenly become a chatterbox. But she *will* be more likely to allow herself to make friends and other attachments, to voice her opinions of choices offered in games, or to pursue things that simply make her happy. Theoretically, if the young master himself were to appear in Kyriakos and be on an opposing team, she would have no reason to oppose busing his team in a game as opposed to another one on which she had friends - while she wouldn't want to kill others if she could avoid it, the same need to protect him wouldn't be there.

Basically, Peko will still be a dutiful person, but she will no longer have that all-consuming, particular duty holding her back. She'll be free to be her awkward, quiet, fluffy-loving self without any concerns about what is "proper" for someone of her status. She'll probably also be unusually defenseless for a while, in terms of physical fighting, until she earns back some of her swordsmanship/self-defense skills.
